Points from the Tao of David Carew, Paladin of Software

Updated: Jan 21, 2022

+ In many things there is neither gate nor sanctuary—you cannot run and you cannot hide. There is only your ability to size up changing situations rapidly and your ability to take action effectively.

+ Take care and apply prudence in all things; the least may turn out to be the most, and we are not always given to know this beforehand.

+ Knowledge of many things is the sword unseen.

+ Work from a suitable design.

+ Do not ride a barefoot pony. Preparedness is key and has many dimensions.

+ Confidence is the result of long and diligent practice, of preparation, of training.

+ Keep your oaths, your word, your commitments. Pay your debts. A promise made is a debt unpaid. The reward for doing this is self-respect. One needs all the self-respect which can be mustered, to stand in the hard wind of an eventful, stressful life. Accordingly it is wise to exercise some care in commitments made, words given, debts assumed.

+ It is unwise to mix good whiskey with anything but water.

+ To enjoy life, take big bites. The prominent striver who goes broke in a big way never misses any meals. It is the moderate, cautious soul coming up only half a slug shy, who must tighten his belt.

+ Never take a proposition bet of any kind from anyone, unless the entertainment value of the play is worth more than the money you will certainly lose.

+ Emily said: “Hope is the thing with feathers/ That perches in the soul/ And sings the tune without the words/ And never stops at all.” Without hope, human beings die, often by their own hand. Never allow any person, especially yourself, to attain or remain in a state with no access to that tiny “thing with feathers”. A secret in this respect is that stories give us hope. Share your stories; listen to and learn from the stories of others. Stories give us hope.

+ In the symphony of life, a player of many parts is seldom silenced.

+ Be careful to intentionally produce more than you consume. Everyone is both a maker and a taker; strive to be more a maker than a taker in every realm of striving.
