There is a minor hit song, by Joni Mitchell and covered by others, titled "Real Good For Free". Here is a YouTube reference:

It tells a little story about Mx Mitchell's reaction to a street musician, "playing real good, for free", while she could perform "...for fortunes, and those velvet curtain calls...".

I note this especially because, as a writer, I feel sometimes like that "...one man band, by the quick lunch stand...". I am an extremely minor writer of non-fiction, successful on Quora-dotcom, where I am established, with probably over a million total views (stats obscured because I delete my less popular answers, attempting to stay topical), averaging a bit fewer than 9000 reads a month. The postings are such that I could be said to be writing "...real good for free", or at least okay for free, so to speak.

Sue and others of my family are disappointed with such efforts; to Sue they are a waste, while I could be writing for "real" paid publication.

I suppose. But we are not starving. There is little economic need for real, paid publication here, and it always has been a tough game, now apparently harder than ever. There is something to be said for being a "one man band by the quick lunch stand...", perhaps writing okay for free (those efforts rewarded by lots of readers taking their time to read).

Respectfully submitted.
